  1. Eugene Morris Pharo (1893-1945) son of Allen Ridgway Pharo and Anna Leeds Ogborn Pharo was a newspaper journalist, writer and captain in the U.S. Army. He attended Westtown Prep School in Westchester Pa. and was a graduate of Haverford College (1915) where he wrote for the Haverfordian.

In 1917 he married Mary Reed Macpherson, with whom he had 4 daughters and a son, residing for a time in Moorestown, NJ. After graduating from Haverford he wrote for a Philadelphia paper (unidentified) and was later a reporter for the Atlantic City Review. During the 1920s he wrote for American serial publications “Everybody’s magazine” “The Smart Set” and “American Mercury” (founded by H.L. Mencken). Pharo eventually became the city editor of the Washington Post. He died Mar. 2, 1945 in Valley Forge Military Hospital after contracting an illness during his years serving in the AMG (Allied Military Government) in London.

Cf. The biographical catalog of the matriculates of Haverford College, together with lists of the members of the college faculty and the managers, officers and recipients of honorary degrees, 1833-1922.

  2. Eugene Morris Pharo is my husbands great-grandfather. We have lots of family information including a memoir written by his daughter.

    • Eugene was my husband’s great uncle. Do not have a lot of info, but do have some pictures which I can dig out.
